304 invitations issued. 85 world-class innovators on their way to Australia.

In the latest update from the Department of Home Affairs, the National Innovation Visa (NIV) has begun shaping Australia’s next generation of talent migration.

Out of more than 9,000 Expressions of Interest (EOIs) submitted globally, early invitation data paints a clear picture: this is a program designed for exceptional contributors in key national priority fields.

If your work drives progress in technology, health, or low-carbon innovation, now is the time to act.

1. A Permanent Pathway for Global Innovators

Introduced in late 2024, the National Innovation Visa (NIV) is a new permanent residence visa that replaces the former Global Talent Visa (subclass 858).

Its purpose is clear — to attract individuals who can accelerate innovation, productivity, and economic growth in Australia’s priority sectors.

Key Features

  • Invitation-only program – ensuring a highly selective, merit-based intake.
  • Strategic sector focus – targeting high-impact and emerging industries.
  • Policy continuity – replacing the GTI while refining Australia’s long-term innovation strategy.

2. Who Qualifies

The NIV is designed for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding ability and measurable impact in their respective fields, including:

  • Researchers and thought leaders shaping international academic or technological frontiers;
  • Innovative investors and entrepreneurs with proven commercial success;
  • Pioneers and founders advancing scalable, high-impact enterprises;
  • Elite athletes and creative professionals who enhance Australia’s global reputation.

3. National Priorities: Where the Invitations Are Concentrated

According to the Department’s latest data, more than 60% of invitations have been granted to Tier 1 industries, particularly Technology and Health — the core of Australia’s innovation ecosystem.

Tier 1 – Core Priority Sectors

  • Critical Technologies
  • Health and Medical Sciences
  • Clean Energy & Decarbonisation

Tier 2 – Supported Growth Sectors

  • Agri-Food and AgTech
  • Defence, Space & National Security
  • Education & Skills Development
  • Financial Services & FinTech
  • Infrastructure & Transport
  • Resources & Minerals

This focus reflects the government’s vision to position Australia as a hub for science, health innovation, and sustainable growth across the Asia-Pacific region.

4. Government Nomination: The Fast-Track Advantage

Applicants who receive state or federal government endorsement may be prioritised for invitation and processing, especially those who:

  • Have a proven record of supporting high-growth, innovation-driven enterprises;
  • Lead early-stage ventures with commercialisation potential;
  • Represent Australia on the global stage in sports or the creative industries.

5. Riverwood Insight: Strategy Matters More Than Status

While the NIV does not require a specific investment amount, it demands verifiable impact and industry-recognised excellence.

Successful applicants typically demonstrate:

  • Tangible contributions to one of the priority sectors (e.g. patents, publications, or scalable ventures);
  • Endorsements from recognised industry or government figures;
  • A clear and credible plan to continue contributing to Australia’s innovation landscape.
