Just A Click Away.
From 1 July 2026, certain Papua New Guinean citizens may be able to use a new streamlined “Apply again” option when applying for an Australian Visitor visa.
The change is intended to make it easier for eligible returning applicants to start a new Visitor visa application using information connected to a previous application.
The arrangement was also communicated to migration professionals through MIA Notice 3 on 10 July 2026.
Importantly, the streamlined option does not apply automatically to every Papua New Guinean citizen. It also does not guarantee faster processing or visa approval.
Who May Be Eligible?
The new option may be available to eligible Papua New Guinean citizens applying for a Visitor visa under the:
- Tourist stream; or
- Business Visitor stream.
Applicants will generally need to have previously been granted an Australian Visitor visa within the past five years.
Eligibility is assessed through ImmiAccount when the applicant selects the “Apply again” option from a completed Visitor visa application.
If the option is not available, or the system confirms that the applicant is not eligible, they will need to lodge a standard new Visitor visa application.
How Does the “Apply Again” Option Work?
Eligible applicants can begin the process through ImmiAccount by following these steps:
- Sign in to the ImmiAccount used for the previous Visitor visa application.
- Open the list of completed applications.
- Locate the most recent completed Visitor visa application.
- Select “Apply again”.
- Follow the system prompts to confirm whether the streamlined process is available.
If the previous application does not appear in the current ImmiAccount, the applicant may need to import it before the “Apply again” option can be used.
The option is designed to reduce repeated data entry and make it easier to begin a new application. However, applicants must still carefully review all pre-filled information and update anything that has changed.
Does the Streamlined Option Mean Faster Processing?
Not necessarily.
The Department has not stated that applications lodged through the “Apply again” option will receive priority processing or a guaranteed faster decision.
Processing times may still depend on factors including:
- the completeness of the application
- the applicant’s travel and visa history
- health and character checks
- identity verification
- requests for further information
- the Department’s overall caseload
The main benefit is a simpler application process for eligible returning applicants, rather than a separate visa stream or guaranteed fast-track service.
What Visa Requirements Still Apply?
The underlying requirements for the Visitor visa have not changed.
Applicants must continue to satisfy all criteria applying to their chosen stream, including the genuine visitor requirement and any applicable financial, health, character and identity requirements.
Depending on the purpose of travel, applicants may need to provide evidence such as:
- the reason for visiting Australia
- proposed travel dates and itinerary
- accommodation arrangements
- sufficient funds for the trip
- employment, business or family ties to Papua New Guinea
- an intention to comply with all visa conditions
A previous visa grant does not guarantee that a new application will be approved.
Each application is assessed on its own facts and against the requirements applying at the time of decision.
Will Applicants Still Need to Provide Biometrics?
Possibly.
Applicants lodging an Australian visa application from Papua New Guinea may still be asked to provide biometrics, including a facial image and fingerprints, unless an exemption or exclusion applies.
If biometrics are required, the applicant will receive instructions after lodgement.
The streamlined application option does not remove health, character, identity or biometric requirements.
What Has Not Changed?
The new arrangement changes how certain eligible applicants can begin a new application. It does not reduce the Department’s ability to examine the application or request additional evidence.
Applicants should not assume that:
- fewer supporting documents will always be required
- a previous visa grant guarantees another approval
- the new application will be processed ahead of other applications
- the streamlined option allows a longer stay
- the option changes the conditions attached to the visa
The visa granted, including its validity period, permitted stay and conditions, will continue to depend on the Department’s assessment.
What Should PNG Applicants Do Before Applying?
Check Whether the Option Is Available
Log in to ImmiAccount and locate the most recent completed Visitor visa application. Check whether the “Apply again” option appears and follow the eligibility prompts.
Review All Existing Information
Do not assume that information carried over from a previous application is still correct.
Applicants should update any changes to their:
- passport
- contact details
- employment
- family circumstances
- travel history
- financial position
- purpose of travel
Prepare Current Supporting Documents
Even where information is carried over, applicants should provide current evidence that supports the purpose and circumstances of the proposed visit.
Address Previous Visa Issues
Applicants with a previous visa refusal, cancellation, overstay or breach of visa conditions should consider obtaining advice before lodging another application.
Incomplete or inconsistent explanations may affect the assessment of whether the proposed visit is genuine and temporary.
Key Takeaways
From 1 July 2026, eligible Papua New Guinean citizens may be able to use a streamlined “Apply again” option for certain Visitor visa applications.
The option is generally relevant to returning applicants under the Tourist or Business Visitor stream who have previously been granted an Australian Visitor visa within the past five years.
It simplifies the process of starting a new application but does not create a new visa category, reduce the legal requirements or guarantee faster processing.
Applicants must still satisfy all relevant Visitor visa criteria and may still be required to provide supporting documents, health information, character records or biometrics.
