Have you always believed that only students who complete a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree can apply for Australia’s 485 Temporary Graduate visa? If you think so, you may be missing out on a great opportunity to stay and work in Australia!

Yes — even if you studied a Vocational Education and Training (VET) course such as TAFE, a Diploma program, or a trade qualification, you may still be eligible to apply for the 485 Post-Vocational Education Work Stream if you meet the requirements. This allows you to stay in Australia legally and gain valuable local work experience.

For many students aiming for Australian skilled migration, especially those pursuing trade occupations (such as chefs, electricians, carpenters, or automotive mechanics), the 485 visa is a key stepping stone toward achieving that goal. Today, Riverwood Migration will walk you through the key information about this “hidden-gem visa”.

485 Post-Vocational Education Work Stream: What Is It?‌

The 485 Post-Vocational Education Work Stream is a graduate work visa designed by the Australian Government for international students who have completed specific vocational education courses.

It usually grants around 18 months of visa validity (Hong Kong and BNO passport holders may receive a longer duration), during which you can live, study, and work full-time in Australia legally.

Are You Eligible? Core Requirements Checklist‌

When applying, the following requirements must all be met:

  • Age: You must be under 35 years old at the time of application (Hong Kong and BNO passport holders may apply up to 50 years old).
  • Qualification: Completion of one or more CRICOS-registered courses that together meet the Australian two-year study requirement, resulting in:
  • Associate Degree / Diploma / Advanced Diploma / Trade Qualification.
  • Occupation relevance: Your qualification must be closely related to a nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). For example, studying commercial cookery to nominate as a Chef, or automotive studies to nominate as a Motor Mechanic.
  • Skills assessment (most critical): When lodging the 485 visa application, you must have already submitted the Skills Assessment application for your nominated occupation. A graduation certificate alone is not sufficient. Trade occupations may also involve processes such as the Job Ready Program.
  • English language requirement:
    • IELTS Academic: Overall score of at least 6.5, with no band below 5.5;
    • or PTE Academic: Overall score of at least 55, with each component meeting the minimum score requirement announced by the Department of Home Affairs for the 485 visa;
    • Always refer to the latest official requirements, and it is recommended to achieve a stable qualifying score early.
  • Other requirements: Hold an eligible Australian visa (usually a valid student visa or a bridging visa within 6 months after graduation), maintain valid OVHC health insurance, lodge an AFP police clearance application, complete the required medical examination, and meet all health and character requirements.

Application Timeline and Fees‌

  • Golden application window: You must lodge the 485 visa application within 6 months of receiving the Completion Letter for your course. Missing this deadline will result in loss of eligibility.
  • Fees: The visa application fee for the primary applicant is currently around AUD 4,600. Additional fees apply if including a partner or children. The exact amount is subject to the Department of Home Affairs website on the date of application.

Avoid These Pitfalls: Details That Determine Success!‌

  • Skills assessment is your “entry ticket”, not a souvenir: Make sure the Skills Assessment application is lodged before submitting your visa application. Choose the correct assessing authority early and understand the process (such as the Job Ready Program for trade occupations).
  • Your qualification must closely match your nominated occupation: Course content must be highly relevant to the nominated occupation, as the Department assesses this strictly. Planning should begin at the course selection stage.
  • Application must be lodged onshore: When lodging the 485 Post-Vocational Education Work Stream, the applicant must be physically in Australia.
  • Plan early: It is recommended to start preparing at least six months before graduation, including English tests, skills assessment, and documentation, to avoid being constrained by the 6-month application window and assessment timelines.

These valuable 18 months are a crucial accumulation period for achieving skilled migration:

  • Gain relevant local work experience to meet state nomination or employer sponsorship work requirements.
  • Progress and complete your skills assessment, laying the foundation for future skilled migration.
  • Achieve higher English test scores to improve migration points.
  • Explore employer sponsorship pathways early, allowing employers to see your long-term value.
