What changed
Home Affairs has updated its SkillSelect page. The next invitation round for the Skilled Independent (subclass 189) visa will now be held on 15 October 2026, two weeks earlier than the 31 October date many people were planning around.
The Department's notice is short: make sure your Expression of Interest (EOI) is up to date and that everything you have provided is accurate.
Why an earlier round is not automatically good news
Most people see this and think "great, sooner". For many, it is. But SkillSelect assesses your EOI as it stands on the day of the round. If your points depended on something happening in the second half of October, the new date changes your position.
That can work for you or against you. Here's how to check where you stand.
5 things to check in your EOI before 15 October
1. Your age
Age points change at 33 and 40. If your birthday falls between 15 and 31 October, the earlier round may actually help you: you could be invited while still in the higher points bracket. Check which side of that birthday the new date puts you on.
2. Your work experience
Experience points step up at 3, 5 and 8 years. If you were counting on reaching one of those thresholds before 31 October, you may not hit it by 15 October. SkillSelect may update your points automatically, but only when the experience has actually been completed. Never claim points you have not reached yet.
3. Your English test
Your test result needs to be valid on the day you are invited, not "around the end of the month". If your result expires close to the round date, confirm exactly where you sit.
4. Your skills assessment
A skills assessment has a validity period, and it differs between assessing authorities. Check the expiry date on your outcome letter and make sure it is still valid on 15 October.
5. Everything else you have claimed
Partner skills, study in Australia, regional study, Professional Year, NAATI and state details all need to match your documents exactly. An invitation issued on inaccurate claims does not disappear as a problem. It usually shows up later, at the visa stage, when it is much harder to fix.
The bottom line
The round date moved. Your claims need to be right on the new date, not the old one.
People react to migration news. Smart applicants prepare for it. Take 20 minutes this week to go through your EOI line by line against your documents. And keep in mind that invitation numbers and cut-offs change from round to round, so check the official results once they are published before making any decisions.
